Red Class Newsletter Spring Term 2020

Dear Parents,

Welcome back, we hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and New Year.  This newsletter is intended to give you a quick overview of what’s happening this term.  We will give you a weekly update, which you will find on the webpage of the school website and receive an email too.  Please make sure you read this information carefully every week, as we will include important timetable changes and events.  If there are any important changes to the weekly schedule we will inform you with a text too.

Our learning this term

This term’s topic is called ‘Bears, Birds and Beasts’.  We will be looking at lots of fabulous books written by a range of authors, fiction and non-fiction.

Some of the books that we will be reading are: The Gruffalo, Where the Wild Things Are, Owl Babies, The Owl who was afraid of the dark, Whatever Next, Peace at Last, Not Now Bernard, Brown Bear, Brown Bear and lots more…

We will have an exciting new role-play this term and an animal hide for our reading corner.  We hope the children like them as much as we do!

Over the term we will read a different book each week and carry out a range of activities based on the story.  To find out more, please see our topic plan.

Visit – We are hoping to go to Delamere Forest for the day.  More details will follow shortly.

Parent Helpers – WE NEED YOU!!!  If you are willing to give up a short space of time to support our learning or utilise your skills e.g. reading, sewing, baking in Red Class we would be really grateful.  Just pop in and let us know!

MYSTERY READER – During the Spring term we will continue having mystery readers in class.  This has always proven to be very popular with our parents/Grandparents in previous years.  There will be a timetable on our classroom door for you to sign up to.  We are going to do it every Thursday and on a Tuesday invite siblings in school to read at 2:50pm.  If these days are not suitable then we will try to be flexible.

What is a mystery reader?  You have to sign up secretly and do not let your child know.  You turn up to school at 2:45pm with a book of your choice (could be your child’s favourite).  All the children cover their eyes and you sit on my chair.  Then they open their eyes and SURPRISE!  You read the story to the children and the children ask you 5 questions about the story at the end.  The children LOVE it and most parents/grandparents do too.  We had a grandparent sign up at least 4 times last year!

P.E. and Forest School – P.E will be every Monday and Forest school will take place on a Tuesday.  You will need to send your child in with two bags, one with P.E. kit in and one with wellies and waterproofs in.  These bags will stay in school until half term and we will send them home to be washed.  Please NAME EVERYTHING!  On a Tuesday your child can come in their own clothes, please make sure these are appropriate for outdoor learning as the weather could be extremely wet and cold and please don’t send your child in lace up shoes unless they can do them by themselves.  As you can imagine how much time this takes up during a day.

Reading / Letters and Sounds – This has been really successful last term.  So many of you are reading with your child most nights.  Don’t worry about what you have to write in the diary, just write ‘read’ if needs be, just so they can get a sticker.  We will be continuing to teach new letter sounds each week, these are getting particularly tricky now so I really need you to reinforce these sounds at home too.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards
