Red Class Newsletter Summer Term 2021

Dear Parents,

Welcome back, we hope you have all had a lovely Easter and have eaten lots of chocolate too.  This newsletter is intended to give you a quick overview of what’s happening this term.  We will give you a weekly update, which you will find on the webpage of the school website and receive an email too.  Please make sure you read this information carefully every week, as we will include important timetable changes and events.  If there are any important changes to the weekly schedule we will inform you with a text too.

Our learning this term

This term’s topic is called ‘Under the Sea and Minibeasts’.  We will be looking at lots of fabulous books written by a range of authors, fiction and non-fiction. We will be starting with a question for each - What lives under the sea? What makes a minibeast a minibeast?

Some of the books that we will be reading are: The Rainbow Fish, Shark information books, The Fish who could wish, The Bumblebear, Mad about minibeasts, Spinderella, What the ladybird heard, Tickly Octopus and lots more…

We will have an exciting new role-play this term which is a boat to sail on.  We hope the children like it as much as we do!

Over the term we will read a different book each week and carry out a range of activities based on the story.  To find out more, please see our medium term plan which is on the website.

Snacks–  Please continue to send a healthy snack and a water bottle (please no juice) for morning break and please name them.

MYSTERY READER –This has always proven to be very popular with our parents/Grandparents in previous years. But unfortunately we haven’t been able to do it due to COVID. So, I thought why not do this over ‘Teams’.  I will put a piece of paper with dates available on the classroom door which you can sign up to.  I will then send you a link to join the class and read them a story.  The children will then ask you a few questions about the book at the end.

Days will be Tuesday and Thursday at 2:30-2:50pm.

What is a mystery reader?  You have to sign up secretly and do not let your child know.  You log on to teams with your chosen book and all the children cover their eyes until you appear.  Then they open their eyes and SURPRISE!  You read the story to the children and the children ask you 5 questions about the story at the end.  The children LOVE it and most parents/grandparents do too.  We had a grandparent sign up at least 4 times last year!

P.E. and Forest School – P.E will be every Tuesday and Forest School will take place on a Monday.

You will need to send your child in with wellies and waterproofs first week back.  This bag will stay in school until half term and we will send them home to be washed.  Please NAME EVERYTHING!

Please make sure clothes on a Monday are appropriate for outdoor learning as the weather could be wet and cold or dry and hot and please don’t send your child in lace up shoes unless they can do them by themselves.  As you can imagine how much time this takes up during a day.

On a Tuesday your child can come in their own P.E clothes.

Reading / Letters and Sounds – This has been really successful last term.  So many of you are reading with your child most nights.  Don’t worry about what you have to write in the diary, just write ‘read’ if needs be, just so they can get a sticker.  We will be continuing to teach new letter sounds each week, these are getting particularly tricky now so I really need you to reinforce these sounds at home too.

Home Learning Tasks–  Home learning activities will be set every Friday via Teams and will be due in on the Thursday after.  I will set this as an assignment.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards

Lucy Newman and Red Class team
