Red Class Newsletter Spring Term 2019

Dear Parents,

Welcome back, we hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and New Year.  This newsletter is intended to give you a quick overview of what’s happening this term.  We will give you a weekly update, which you will find on the webpage of the school website and receive an email too.  Please make sure you read this information carefully every week, as we will include important timetable changes and events.  If there are any important changes to the weekly schedule we will inform you with a text too.

Our learning this term

This term’s topic is called ‘Where will we go and how will we get there?’  We will be looking at lots of fabulous books written by a range of authors, fiction and non-fiction and hopefully getting to see a range of different types of transport.  If you have or know of anyone with an interesting/different type of transport which we could see, the please let us know.

Some of the books that we will be reading are: The hundred decker bus by Mike Smith, Emma Jane’s Aeroplane by Katie Haworth, All aboard for the Bobo road by Stephen Davies, The Naughty Bus, Duck in the truck, Oi! Get off our train, Mr Gumpy’s Outing/Motor car, Lost and Found, Amelia Earhart, The Great Balloon Hullaballoo and more…..

We have a space station and rocket as our role-play this term and a hot air balloon for our reading corner.  We are very excited!

Over the term we will look at a range of transport/vehicles, old and new, how we would get to certain places around the World etc.  To find out more, please see our topic plan.

Visit – We are hoping to go on a train ride with the whole class to Wrenbury and walk to the primary school and meet up with their reception class for a picnic and chat.  Will let you know when we know more.  Thinking of doing this right at the end of Spring term.

Parent Helpers – WE NEED YOU!!!  If you are willing to give up a short space of time to support our learning or utilise your skills e.g. reading, sewing, baking in Red Class we would be really grateful.  Just pop in and let us know!

MYSTERY READER – During the Spring term we will be having mystery readers coming into class.  This has always proven to be very popular with our parents/Grandparents in previous years.  There will be a timetable on our classroom door for you to sign up to.  We are going to do it every Tuesday and Thursday at 2:50pm.  If these days are not suitable then we will try to be flexible.

What is a mystery reader?  You have to sign up secretly and do not let your child know.  You turn up to school at 2:45pm with a book of your choice (could be your child’s favourite).  All the children cover their eyes and you sit on my chair.  Then they open their eyes and SURPRISE!  You read the story to the children and the children ask you 5 questions about the story at the end.  The children LOVE it and most parents/grandparents do too.  We had a grandparent sign up at least 4 times last year!

P.E. and Forest School – P.E will be every Monday and Forest school will take place on a Tuesday.  You will need to send your child in with two bags, one with P.E. kit in and one with wellies and waterproofs in.  These bags will stay in school until half term and we will send them home to be washed.  Please NAME EVERYTHING!  On a Tuesday your child can come in their own clothes, please make sure these are appropriate for outdoor learning as the weather could be extremely wet and cold.

Reading / Letters and Sounds – This has been really successful last term.  So many of you are reading with your child most nights.  Don’t worry about what you have to write in the diary, just write ‘read’ if needs be, just so they can get a sticker.  We will be continuing to teach new letter sounds each week, these are getting particularly tricky now so I really need you to reinforce these sounds at home too.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards
