Orange Class News - 22nd April 2016

Date: 22nd Apr 2016 @ 10:50pm

It was lovely to see so many of you at the Year 1 Phonics Screening check meeting this week.  Thank you for giving up such a glorious evening to come in to school.  I hope you found the session informative and that it answered any questions you may have had.  I am really keen to receive your feeback on whether it was useful and how it could be improved.  Please e-mail me with any feedback (address at the bottom of this newsletter).  The presentation is on the class webpage and, as always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns.

This week we have been making story maps to help us re-write 'Ten Seeds' by Ruth Brown for a more grown up audience.  In maths we have been exploring addition and developing our writing of addition number sentences alongside solving a variety of addition problems.  We have also been exploring the effect of different seasons and weather on trees and started compiling our own A-Z of edible plants.  In P.E. we have started athletics and have been learning how to run in lanes, maximising our performance by using our arms correctly and focusing on our destination.

The children are taking 'Run to Rio' very seriously and I am delighted to report that, as a class we have run over 125 miles in 3 weeks (that's running from Nantwich to Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire or from Nantwich to Hunstanton in Norfolk).  Our figures have been significantly enhanced by the number of children and parents who are joining in the morning run - so a big thank you to you all.

We are off to Milldale on Tuesday next week and still need a couple of permission slips and lunch orders.  These must be in on Monday at the latest to ensure that your child can A) attend and that B) the kitchen prepares a lunch for them.

Children should wear suitable layered clothing (we will be outdoors all day and the conditions can be very variable at this time of year) We will take wellies and waterproofs from school, so if your child's are not in yet then please ensure they come in on Monday.  Please also ensure that all clothing is clearly named - as I am sure you can appreciate, it is very challenging to match 90 children with the correct clothing whilst we are there.

Home Learning

Our home learning this week is slightly different and was suggested by the children themselves as our 'Orange Class' door sign has fallen off and appears to have got lost.

Your challenge for this week is to design a new door sign on either a 'Welcome to Orange Class' or 'We are Learning about...' theme.  For the latter please see our topic plan for details on what we are learning about.  We would like to get as many as possible so that we can change those on display weekly.  Be as creative as you like - painted, sketched, collage, computer designed etc.  The only restrictions are size and orientation:

  • it must be no larger than A3
  • if A4 or smaller it can be portrait or landscape
  • if A3 it must be portrait orientation to fit in the space on the door.

We look forward to seeing your designs next week.

Resources - thank you so much for your fantastic response to our plea for egg boxes and cardboard tubes.  We are still hunting for interesting collage materials - fabric scraps, wallpaper, bubble wrap, craft papers, old buttons, wool, ribbon and thread, wrapping paper, carrier bags (esp. green ones) etc.  We are creating a large, whole class woodland themed piece for display in Nantwich Museum during 'Schoolsfest' in July and would really appreciate any materials that we can recycle for you!

Have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing the children on Monday.

Kind regards

Mrs. Adams & Mrs. Degg
