Year 3 Class News Letter

Monday 9th May 2016

Dear Parents,

It was strange only having four days this week and we worked hard to fit everything into those four days.  The children worked hard and we had some exciting results.

We published our writing this week based around an air raid and evacuating to an Anderson shelter.  The children edited beautifully after we spent time under the lights again performing parts of the text they had written. It was an effective way to edit, as the children could see the results of their editing instantly.

The children will be learning about the journey of an evacuee this week in the build up for our class visit to Woodcocks’ Wells.  We’ll be using a play script called ‘Bombs and Blackberries’ to guide our learning.  The children will be writing and performing a play script later in the week.  It’s a really is a great way to communicate a story to an audience.

Speaking of our visit, could you please can you fill in the permission slip as soon as possible, so I can send the lunch information to the school we are visiting?  The meal is delicious and I’m encouraging the children to have it on the day.

The children have been completing some super sketches of the artefacts we have in our classroom. We’ll be adding them to our learning journals this week.

The children were really engaged with our new Science topic and they were fascinated with some of the videos we used to guide our thinking. They are all available on Edmodo if you would like to see them.

I’m looking forward to seeing the children’s homework this week, particularly the Science investigation. We’ll be analyzing the results in class on Tuesday. It’s been great to see all the different ways the children are presenting their spelling homework – we’ve had spiders, scribbles, and flowers so far! Please encourage the children to write their newfound words in sentences or at least discuss what they mean.

It was great to watch and take part in the children’s Samba lesson on Thursday with Mrs Minshall. It was very loud, but the children were fantastic and we were very pleased with the results of our lesson.

We started to look at Mindfulness this week and how we think about ourselves.  We asked the children “Who are you?” and encouraged them to thinking of strengths they had rather than the things they do eg creativeness

The videos relating to the maths skills this week are on Edmodo. Please encourage the children to watch them as it really does make a difference to their learning back in school.  I’ve seen a big improvement in the children who have watched the videos at home already. They are ready for learning when they come in and know exactly what they need to do.  Please encourage your children to watch the videos.

We enjoyed using A.L.E.X the robot this week to learn about angles larger and smaller then 90 degrees and also used the app to learn about clockwise and anti clockwise movements.  Have a look on Facebook to see the pictures from the day.  You can download it here (iOS) or (Android)

This week we will learn how to identify horizontal and vertical lines and pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines.

Horizontal and vertical lines -

PLEASE WATCH TO 1 minute 56 seconds only.

MANGAMATHS – I’ve also found a great new site to use alongside MyMaths - The children are already registered on there and I’ve used the same log in details as My Maths, which are in their homework books.  The only thing they will need is the school code, which is 320471

Have a play, it’s something the children are not required to do, but is nice alternative to May Maths if you’d like to use it.

We continue to develop our running skills this week on Monday morning and this will help us select our Year 3 Town Sports squad very soon.  We have also been learning how to correctly and safely throw a Javelin this week. We’ll be measuring the distance we’ve thrown this week, testing our measuring skills too.

We’ll be converting the measurements from metres to centimetres as well back in the classroom.

I will of course be Tweeting and Facebooking throughout the year. I’ll keep you up to date throughout the term via:
