Year 3 Class News Letter

Monday 3rd May 2016

Dear Parents,

It’s been a very busy week in Green class and I hope you’ve enjoyed the long weekend.

The children impressed me when we looked at a piece of writing on Monday and they found out what was good about it. We then used this research to investigate similes and personification.  We used some pictures and then brought them to life. “The shadows danced on the wall.”

We used all these skills to write our own version of what it was like during an air raid. The children drew on the drama they completed last week to create something special. We’ll be editing and publishing these this week for our learning journals.

We’ve had some great artefacts brought into school and the children talked about them stories behind them.  It was also lovely to see some pictures on Edmodo or relatives and even some Anderson shelters!  Have a look, they really are great to look at.

You should have received a letter about our visit to Woodcocks’ Wells this week.  Please can you fill in the permission slip as soon as possible, so I can send the lunch information to the school we are visiting?  The meal is delicious and I’m encouraging the children to have it on the day.

We added the research the children completed for homework this week to our iBooks and they’re starting to build up nicely. We’ll be adding sound and video to them this week.

We will be starting a new topic in Science this week when we look at Light and Shadows. This week’s homework will be based on finding materials that are transparent, translucent or opaque.

This week the children have some maths problems to complete – they’re tough. Just complete what you can; it will give me an idea of where the children are up to with their problem solving.

The spelling work is looking good in the homework books and I’m starting to see the children understanding more and more of the words they’ve investigated. Please encourage the children to write their newfound words in sentences or at least discuss what they mean.

Through our science work this week we were able to look again at graphs and how to create them. It was great to be able to analsye the results using a visual.

We learned so much from the Buddhist Monks on Friday and I must admit I felt a lot more relaxed after we mediated with the children.  Please ask your children about the experience, it really was something they’ll always remember.

The videos relating to the maths skills this week are on Edmodo. Please encourage the children to watch them as it really does make a difference to their learning back in school.  I’ve seen a big improvement in the children who have watched the videos at home already. They are ready for learning when they come in and know exactly what they need to do.  Please encourage your children to watch the videos.

We’ll be focusing on angles this week. The children were able to spot angles that were bigger or smaller than a right angle and now we’re moving onto naming those angles.

Thank you for encouraging the children to get on line this week – it really has had a positive impact on their learning.  Playposit and Plickers have been a huge hit with the children.  Keep checking Edmodo!

MANGAMATHS – I’ve also found a great new site to use alongside MyMaths - https://www.mangahigh.com/en-gb/ The children are already registered on there and I’ve used the same log in details as My Maths, which are in their homework books.  The only thing they will need is the school code, which is 320471

Have a play, it’s something the children are not required to do, but is nice alternative to May Maths if you’d like to use it.

The children enjoyed their athletics session on Monday and further developed their agility by completing the beanbag race that features at Town Sports.  I was poolside again this week for swimming and I was very impressed with the children’s attitude to learning and how much they tried.  We have now finished our swimming sessions and I would like to thank Mrs McKie for coming every week to help us.

I’ll be holding a trial for our upcoming Year 3 and 4 football tournament at some point this week. The children will only need their trainers from their PE kit, so no need to send in any kit.

I will of course be Tweeting and Facebooking throughout the year. I’ll keep you up to date throughout the term via:
