Year 3 Class News Letter

Monday 18th April 2016

Dear Parents,

What a busy first week back after Easter. The children have been great all week and been hard at work.

We completed our Charlie and the Chocolate Factory pages in our learning journals and the children were so proud of them. They’ve worked so hard to make them the best they can be and enjoyed writing their reviews about the topic.

We had so much fun ‘playing’ with eggs on Friday. Yes, playing with eggs. Could we break an egg in our hands? Have a look at pictures on the website to find out if we were successful. The children have already got some plans for what they would like to test – anybody willing to donate an ostrich egg?

Our new topic is available on our new look website - http://www.peartreeprimary.co.uk/class/green-class There is also a sneak peak of our brand new role-play for this term.  By the end of the year we will form part of Pear Tree Theatre Company to present part of King Lear.

I’m starting to arrange our visit to Woodcocks’ Wells school and I’ll let you have the letter at some point next week.  It really is a stunning visit and one the children will always remember.

We’ll start next week looking at why war broke out and why London was bombed so heavily.  This will link nicely with the start of The Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe. We’ll be making notes as we go along this week.

Please can you encourage the children to watch this clip of the opening to the film – it will really help set the scene for the start of the book https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxsMWAEpHxU

I hope you’ve managed to find this terms Padlet and start recording some of your learning on there. Please feel free to post your own stories on there.  Everyone has a story about World War II – the children have already told me about granddads and other relatives who lived during the war.

It was great to see so many children completing spelling investigations in their homework books. We looked at spelling scribbles and some spelling explosions!  Please make sure the children are completing this important task. If you have any questions about how to help with this homework, please ask.

The videos relating to the maths skills this week are on Edmodo. Please encourage the children to watch them as it really does make a difference to their learning back in school.  I’ve seen a big improvement in the children who have watched the videos at home already. They are ready for learning when they come in and know exactly what they need to do.  Please encourage your children to watch the videos.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at problem solving skills involving all the skills we have learned over the last term.  The children have learned lots of written methods of calculation and now is the time to see if they can apply those skills.  There will be, of course, time to rehearse any written methods they are not too sure of. We will cover addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (including fractions).

The videos the children will need to watch will be posted at various points over the next few weeks.  The children need to watch these addition and subtraction videos.  We’ll be focussin on decompostion and then solving additon and subtraction problems this week.

Thank you for encouraging the children to get on line this week – it really has had a positive impact on their learning.  Playposit and Plickers have been a huge hit with the children.  Keep checking Edmodo!

MANGAMATHS – I’ve also found a great new site to use alongside MyMaths - https://www.mangahigh.com/en-gb/ The children are already registered on there and I’ve used the same log in details as My Maths, which are in their homework books.  The only thing they will need is the school code, which is 320471

Have a play, it’s something the children are not required to do, but is nice alternative to My Maths if you’d like to use it.

During PE this term we will be starting our athletics sessions and completing our swimming sessions. We enjoyed our first athletics session on Monday and the children improved their running techniques – particularly at the start of the sprint.

I will be running an ‘Online Dangers’ evening for parents on Tuesday 19th April. It is designed to help parents understand how to help their children stay safe online.  Please come along to the meeting – it really does give you an insight into what your children is experiencing when going online.

We will have swimming for the next two weeks before Yellow class start their lessons. Please make sure the children have their full swimming kit.

I will of course be Tweeting and Facebooking throughout the year. I’ll keep you up to date throughout the term via:
