Year 3 Class News Letter

Monday 16th May 2016

Dear Parents,

As I’m writing this, I’m thinking about tomorrow’s visit to Woodcocks’ Wells and Congleton Museum and how it must have felt to actually be evacuated to the countryside during the war.

We talked about this in depth this week and discussed our thoughts and feelings towards being evacuated.  The children learned all about evacuation and developed their note taking skills whilst doing it. It was lovely to be outside performing in the sunshine as well!

We linked this to our new book ‘Bombs and Blackberries’ and investigated play scripts. The children then had the opportunity to try out some of the scenes in the classroom before discussing the features of the text eg stage directions, introductions, character names etc

We’ll be using our experiences tomorrow to write our own play script and then perform it for the rest of the class in small parts.  The children will have plenty to write about when they write their letters home from their new evacuee homes in the countryside.

I’m really looking forward to the visit tomorrow and I’m sure the children will be full of stories when they get home.

We had an amazing time discussing what happened when we measured our shadows on Monday. The children were really interested to find out why they moved, got shorter, then longer again.  We managed to use our measuring skills to record the lengths of the shadows, then analysed the results back in the classroom.

Thank you for the children’s science homework this week. It really was a super piece of home learning and the children could talk in detail about what they did and the results they achieved.  The children enjoyed comparing their results with their friends on Tuesday.

I’ve a couple of coin investigations in already and it is great to see the range of ways that the children have used to solve the problem.  We’ll be discussing how we solved the problems in class on Tuesday.

Three Good Things – this was the theme of our mindfulness work this week. I asked the children to think of three good things that happened on Friday and keep hold of them.  I did ask them to ask you as well – I wonder if they did?  If not have a think yourselves at the end of today.  What three good things happened today?

The videos relating to the maths skills this week are on Edmodo. Please encourage the children to watch them as it really does make a difference to their learning back in school.  I’ve seen a big improvement in the children who have watched the videos at home already. They are ready for learning when they come in and know exactly what they need to do.  Please encourage your children to watch the videos.

This week we will start to investigate 2D and 3D shapes. We’ll draw, build, rotate, unpack, look for patterns and much more.

We continue to develop our running skills this week on Monday morning and this will help us select our Year 3 Town Sports squad very soon.  We have also been learning how to correctly and safely throw a Javelin this week. We’ll be measuring the distance we’ve thrown this week, testing our measuring skills too.

We spent time sketching and water colouring flowers on Friday afternoon – it really was a lovely afternoon and the children really enjoyed the challenges.

Good luck to our Year 3 and 4 football team on Friday who will be competing at MMU Cheshire.  Our Tag Rugby squad will be competing on Tuesday night – good luck to them also. What a sporty week!
